94 Cooper Street , Surry Hills 2010
When m ac-interactive Architects and Material (Landscape Architects) moved into their new office premises in 2005 they had found exactly what they were looking for : too much space in a relatively quiet part of Surry Hills, Sydney. It was not pretty ; but definitely industrial chic. A 30 m x 8 m raw warehouse space with timber floor s , rendered brick walls, exposed timber roof trusses and the classic warehouse steel frame windows - All painted institutional grey. There was also some rather grim toilets and a kitchen at the back. mac-interactive respected the Industrial character of the space , and with next to no budget, the only changes made to the base building were the wooden floors which have been sanded back and clear sealed. 2 doors at the back have been blocked up, and a new ceiling + roof insulation has been installed. Walls and ceilings have been painted White. With the interior design, however, they have turned the space into a perfect working environment for the 2 architecture businesses. All the furniture is purpose designed for the space.
